Works for Guitar
Giulio Tampalini, guitar
I write for the guitar because of its extraordinary expressive power: it can whisper and sing, cut and caress, build complex sound worlds or reveal a striking simplicity. Each of my pieces is born from an image, an emotion, an inner rhythm that I try to transform into sound. The classical tradition is, for me, a starting point rather than a constraint: I carry it with me, letting it blend with the harmonies, colors, and structures of my own time. In my compositions, I always seek a narrative dimension, something that can move and resonate, something that music can hold still in time.. One of the first pieces I composed, included in this CD, is E ancora non mi pesa il ricordo, born almost by chance on an old bench in Saluzzo on a summer night. It is a melody that evokes and observes, that smiles with nostalgia—a vision that often returns in my more intimate works. Alongside this inner dimension, my relationship with Nature is fundamental, an inexhaustible source of inspiration. I have dedicated many pieces to it, including Giochi d’acqua, in which an Alpine stream takes shape through arpeggios and small scales that chase one another like fresh cascades, similar to those in which I love to immerse myself during mountain hikes. In My new landscape, on the other hand, a luminous scene emerges, immersed in stillness and light. Another central element in my music is represented by family bonds, to which I owe the serenity of my life and, consequently, of my writing. To them I have dedicated works such as Dentro te, conceived as a gift for my wife Anna; Febbraio 97, recalling the date of our wedding; and Ninna nanna a Donegal, dedicated to my daughter Sveva. In recent years, my writing has evolved toward a more essential and introspective dimension, often accompanied by a broader, even social reflection. Pieces such as Quel mare che non c’era and Favela attempt to convey realities that are difficult to express in words: in the former, arpeggios evoke the motion of waves; in the latter, bossa nova rhythms infused with saudade conjure the atmosphere of Rio’s outskirts.
Among all my compositions, there are two that feel particularly close to me: Terra e Cielo and Lasciati avvolgere. Though different in structure and duration, they share a deep expressive affinity. Terra e Cielo was born as a reflection on the human condition, often anchored to the search for material elements: a tension rendered through a pulsating, almost physical rhythm that, at a certain point, rises toward a more serene and spiritual dimension, opening a space of dream and poetry. Lasciati avvolgere, on the other hand, represents a kind of artistic statement: music is my life, and my wish is that its energy may fully embrace both myself and the listener. Completing this journey are two suites. 3 Impressioni parigine is a tribute to the city of Paris, which is particularly dear to me, through three musical portraits inspired by great Impressionist painters - Monet, Gauguin, and Toulouse-Lautrec. These are true “sound watercolors,” where melodic impulses, evocative arpeggios, and hints of musette waltz alternate. The Sonatina Suite, on the other hand, is structured in four movements and is dedicated to the performer of this recording. It was born from reading and reflecting on four spring haiku from sixteenth-century Japan: seventeen syllables capable of containing a world, sometimes dreamed, sometimes real, yet always suspended and ephemeral, just like the music I sought to create to express their intimate poetry. Entrusting my music to the hands of Giulio Tampalini, a remarkable guitarist for both technical mastery and expressive depth, but above all a sincere friend, means placing it in the care of an interpreter capable of listening deeply, understanding its most intimate nuances, and returning its voice with authenticity. With him, a rare dialogue has taken shape: my pages have found an interpreter able to go beyond the written score and fully inhabit it. His touch reveals transparency, sustains rhythmic tension, and gives body to the most subtle resonances and dynamics. This recording represents for me a journey through real places and inner landscapes. If, while listening, you find yourself glimpsing a horizon, rediscovering a face, or sensing the weight of the earth or the lightness of the wind, then my music will have found its way.
