Antonio Bibalo - North Beyond
The choice of works accompanying Bibalo’s music on this recording reflects a narrative intent. Skrjabin’s Prelude for the Left Hand recalls the attention Bibalo gives to that hand in his Miniatures. De Falla and Bartók evoke his early influences. Chačaturjan’s Toccata is a personal tribute: it was the score he gave me during his last visit to Trieste. Grieg honours the Norway that welcomed him, while Ginastera, in the Danzas Criollas — like Bibalo in his Balkan Dances
— draws on his roots to say something new. The question running through this recording is simple and dizzying: how did a nearly unknown musician from Triest gain Henry Miller’s support and eventually reach Norway, where his music found recognition? The short unpublished autobiography that follows — which Bibalo left to a close friend — offers a few answers, in the frank tone characteristic of him.
