The album

The long periods of political domination, carried out in Italy already in the pre-Renaissance era by the crowns of Aragon and Castile, create a fruitful twist of artistic and musical events that closely link Italy and Spain. One of the most important musicians in the birth of the instrumental repertoire, the Spaniard Diego Ortiz, lived from 1553 in the Viceroyalty of Naples where he took on the role of Maestro di cappella for the Viceroy. The success achieved by Domenico Scarlatti in the 18th century at the courts of Seville or Madrid or the prestige got by Luigi Boccherini in the Spanish capital in the last decades of the same century represent the most authentic proof of this relationship. Both Scarlatti and Boccherini died in Madrid, a city evidently not lived as a simple crossing point. Their works are therefore inevitably influenced by the cultural climate that animated Iberian artistic life, which thus becomes a fundamental ingredient in the evolution of their respective styles. In the guitar repertoire of the early 19th century, fully delimited within the framework of the tonal system, the distinctions deriving from the different geographical and cultural origins are somewhat diluted. So Fernando Sor's production is characterized, in comparison with that of his coeval composers, more by the typical traits of its author's nature than by the fact that he was born and trained musically in Catalonia. Instead, it is with the national school represented by Enrique Granados and Isaac Albèniz that the style of Spanish origin emerges with unequivocal clarity. The elegance and melodic charm of the Valses poeticos as well as of Mallorca paint a picture perfectly consistent with the history and culture of the land where those authors were formed. In the copious guitar production by Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco, originating from the successful artistic partnership developed with Andrès Segovia, references to the Iberian tradition are very often found. The choice of titles of works such as Caprichos de Goya, Escarraman, Tonadilla or Romancero gitano says a lot about the attention paid by the Florentine composer to Spain, the nation from which his family also came. The Sonatina canonica op. 196, masterfully structured on the form of the canon, reworks some themes already used by Domenico Scarlatti, an aspect that helps us to identify yet another connection in this journey. Mario Gangi's Italian Suite is nourished by themes and rhythms typical of the Neapolitan tradition, based in a history in which the musical heritage of Spain, also because of the political events mentioned above, has played a non-marginal role. The Ricercare by the writing Eros Roselli, composed with evident reference to the sixteenth-century Italian tradition, serves as the last link with the pre-classical repertoire. This path traced along the Mediterranean route ends in fact with a leap back into history: the Aragonese guitarist Gaspar Sanz Celma, active until the beginning of the 18th century, resided for long periods in Rome and Naples where, in addition to enriching and consolidating his training musically, he came into contact with the works by the guitarists Foscarini, Granata, Corbetta or Pellegrini. The arrangement for two guitars of one of his most famous compositions, Jacaras, represents, at the same time, a tribute to the work of a protagonist in the development of guitar literature and the right piece to close this small mosaic, to place the last useful brick to consolidate the bridges that keep Italy and Spain united in the guitar repertoire.
